So How Was Your Day?

(I know it’s been forever since I posted, but I am ignoring that and just carrying on)

So, yesterday, there I am downstairs, putting some laundry through.  I head back upstairs, and think “Strange, the floor is wet.  It wasn’t wet when I came down 15 minutes ago.”

I holler at the old guy to come and take a look.  While he is mucking around valves and pipes and tanks trying to figure where the heck all this is coming from, I grab the shop vac and start sucking up the water.  And moving boxes so they won’t get their feet wet.  And moving boxes so I can get behind them to suck up the water that has snuck back there.

The old guy informs me that water is coming up through the drain.  When you have a septic tank and field, and it is winter, this is not a good thing.  (There was one good thing…  I was doing laundry when it all started, not flushing the toilet, so I was dealing with nice clean water.  Thank heaven)

The old guy goes out and mucks around with the tank etc., and I grab the phone and start calling all the septic tank pumper out people.

We have been patting ourselves on the back because while we have snow, we don’t have FEET of snow like we have for the last 2 years.  However, it seems that while in some ways not so much snow is a good thing, as far as your septic field goes, it is not.  It seems all that snow has a lovely insulating factor, which is even more important if you have been away from home a lot, so no nice steamy water is flowing around down there.  And it seems like a LOT of people have been away a lot, because the septic people, including Scott, Larry, Harry, and who knows all, are booked up solid with pumpiing out other people’s tanks.

I keep on phoning and leaving messages where I get no answer.  Finally, the phone rings..  it’s Rose, the septic lady.  “Hi Rose”  I say “Hi, you need “  she says, and the phone goes “beep beep” and drops dead.  The battery is too low.  I grab the other phone to call Rose back.  It goes “beep beep” and drops dead.

The old guy grabs the cell phone and jumps in the truck to drive up the road and call Rose.  I know this sounds strange.  But in spite of what the lovely people at the phone company told us, we have no cell reception on our property.  If we drive to the main road, we do.  But since we are only 1 mile as the crow flies from Saskatchewan, we pick up the Sask. tower, and it is long distance to phone our house which is 100 feet away.  Go figure.  So he drives up the road to where we can pick up the Alberta tower, and he gets Rose, and she can come in “an hour or so”.

We sit around and wait.  For an hour or so.  Which turns out to be 3 hours.  Rose arrives, the lovely lady that she is, and pumps out the tank.

Of course, while we are waiting, we have to use the toilet.  The whole time we chant “don’t flush, don’t flush”, and once I dang near flushed anyway.

Then, we go looking for the heaters to put down in the corners to make sure everything is completely dry.  And they are hooped, toasted, and no dang good.

We jump in the truck, drive to Canadian Tire, buy 2 heaters that are on sale, I collect my Canadian Tire money.  It is now 6 at night, and we have nothing out of the freezer for dinner.

We stop for the Chinese buffet, and go home.  Where it is cold cold cold…  well, not that bad, the insulation in this house is pretty good.

Seems the old guy shut off anything electrical around the flowing water.  (A good thing)  And forgot to turn it on.  (Not so good)  Turn the furnace back on, turn on the gas fireplace, have nice cup of tea and go to bed.

And the whole thing, dinner included, cost about $250.00.  Not so bad, all things considered.

Rose, I love ya!

I can SO relate!! Been there, done that – only my luck never seems to run into “only laundry water”! We make sure the room with the drain is pretty much empty just because of that! *sigh!* Gotta’love farm life – ah! The independance, the privacy and the odd distaster to remind you you can’t live like an island! Hahahahahaha!
