Where did October go??

In my defense, I have been busy, busy, busy working on a huge, humungous, largest project of my entire life, and have had a little tiny short window to meet a serious deadline.  With the help of the wonderful members of the Edmonton Knitters Guild (generous ladies, awesome knitters!) I made it.  And now have time to breathe before diving back in for the next deadline.  More on all that later.

The weekend at the mill was lovely and relaxing.  The dye day went well.  We did the colour wheel using a 2% depth of shade.  Sheila provided the students with enough yarn that everyone had about 25 yds. of each colour , so they could knit a rainbow item (scarf, hat) if they wanted.  In the afternoon, dye was flung at skeins, and we had rainbow skeins, ombre skeins, resist dyed, you name it.  And Caroline sat at the back of the class, spinning away on her Russian spindle, and keeping me on track when I zoned out thinking about that looming deadline.  The weather was horrible, but the company was great, and I came home energized.

There weren’t as many people as usual.  Sheila plans this weekend to come at the end of harvest.  Unfortunately, harvest is very late this year, so many of the usual attendees were out in the fields running combines.  Here’s hoping the weather is more on track for next year.

There are a couple of new items up on the site.  A wee bit of Bison/Merino 50/50 roving (very limited quantities of this)  Some undyed “alpaca peer pressure” sock yarn (a lovely medium grey).  (Why peer pressure?  Because I gave in to pressure and have a sock yarn with nylon in it)  This comes in a generous 450 yd. skein.  For socks, knit it up at about 8 sts. to the inch.  But it is a lovely sweater yarn too, I’ve used it at about 7 to the inch for garments. It is a blend of 60% alpaca, 20% merino, and 20% nylon.  Lovely stuff. (and all Canadian too)

There will be a few more new things coming shortly.

Take a look at the Finn Fingering (also listed under sock yarn)  This was spun with a very tight twist, and should make great socks, and mittens too.

I will leave you with this definition, posted to a list I’m on, by a reader from Ontario.

The Fibre Person’s definition of “housecleaning”

“Housecleaning” *noun*
The unintended result of a massive search for the one hoped for skein of
yarn of a particular type or colour to finish a long-ago begun project.  As
countless closets, cupboards, drawers, bags, cases and rooms are mercilessly
and aggressively ransacked, tossed, emptied and asystemacically torn
asunder,  the resulting carnage must be dealt with, disposed of and
re-stacked, restored and categorized.  Inadvertantly, one has accomplished
“housecleaning”, (and usually at least one new project has been cast on).

Yup. That’s about right. Same thing happened in my pantry last night as I was looking for the molassas to make ginger snaps. After getting a few things in order there, I remembered that I had taken the molassas to a friend who had a lamb that wouldn’t take a bottle. Sigh.
